I was super stoked when I heard about Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat and how nutrient-dense it is. In fact I couldn’t wait to try it out in some of my favorite recipes, including this Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat banana bread. Studies show Tartary’s a vitamin, mineral, and polyphenol-rich powerhouse with bioactive compounds.
If you haven’t heard about Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat (HTB) yet, it’s a high-power superfood and exceptionally bioactive plant. It’s indigenous to Eastern Asia and grows in India, Europe, the Himalayas, Pakistan, Nepal.
It gained traction recently here in the US due to compounds like rutin, quercetin, luteolin, and hesperidin — all bioactive hormesis fuels that regenerate cells.
It rocks flavanols, polyphenols, prebiotics, vitamins, minerals, and molecules called 2-Hydroxybenzylamine (2-HOBA) and D-chiro-inositol, the former of which, according to one report, is rather rare:
“While the exact ways in which this molecule [2-HOBA] works are complicated, it seems to have a unique effect on various signaling pathways in our cells. Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat is known to be one of the few plants on earth that produces natural 2-HOBA.”
Says another source:
“The grains of Tartary buckwheat are rich in proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals, as well as rutin, quercetin, and other flavonoids that other Gramineae crops don’t contain. Hence, Tartary buckwheat has considerable nutritional and medicinal values, which is considered as an ideal functional food source for humans.”
Well it’s certainly functional in banana bread, pancakes, waffles, muffins, and other cooked foods. However I always dilute it a bit because it has a powerful taste.

It’s well worth noting that Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat products exposed to extended heat by manufacturers lose quercetin and other nutrients.
Hence making your own sprouted flour is ideal, though obviously not feasible for all.
Organic Tartary seeds are available for sprouts, juicing, milling, making tea.
